Unit 3 Blog Entry: Economic Globalization

Part A: Reflection (8)

In this unit I learned that… sweatshops is a huge impact on Economic Globalization.
I found it really interesting that… transnational corperations (TNC) have their own little TNC called subsidiary's.
I can connect what have learned in class to my life because… i shop at TNC all the time for exmaple Wal-Mart, i always go to Wal-Mart.
What surprised me this unit was… how many sweatshops their are around us. I knew they existed and that Nike was huge on, for example i did not know that Disney was one.
One concept that I am still having difficulty with is…economic nationalism and protectionism i do not understand the full concept of thsese words.
One question I still have is… if a developing countries do not need sweatshops than why do we still have them?
One skill or learning strategy I found helpful was…word wall, it was a challenge but in order to complete it properly you would need to undertstand  full concept of the word also it would show it connected to other words,  If I was to teach someone how to use this I would tell them to first you need to understand the words you use becuase it will be easier to complete. Then to choose about nine words to fill in each circle.Next pick a word that can connect to alomost all words. Finally between each circle write a short sentence of how each word is connected to one anothe. This will help them learn/remember … the meaning and how it connects to something else.

Part B: Free Trade
Free trade is trade between many different countries with few trade barriers. During free trade outsourcing happens between countires that are trading with one another. Outsourcing is when one company gives another company a job to fulfill in production. Free trade is positive because that is how we get most of our resources is from anotehr country, there is also tariffs during free trade, a tariff is tax on goods. Therefore free trade is World Trade Organization.

Part C: Globalization Cartoon

This cartoon relates to the term Sweatshops. This source relates to sweatshops becuase the male is wearing a shirt that says "sweatshops shirt." This shows that maybe he is bragging about how his shirt was made in a sweatshop. The lady beside him hers says "I'm with stupid," with an arrow pointing at him. This shows that she is not impressed because of his shirt. Also it shows that he is in a cave about sweatshops, he does not know what happens in sweatshops. For example he does not know that a young child has worked on that shirt for hours, been possibly abused while making it and maybe does not have a good quality shirt of their own. Therefore this source is an example of a term we have learned during this unit.

Partaliz D: Globation Videos

 Pro-Globalization
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjY5iZ5C-Ig
This video is pro-globalization because it shows how there are many terrible things happening in our world around us but we do not bother to do anything because it does not effect us.

Anti-Globalization
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QeXvtz0_Ex0&NR=1
This video is anti-globalization beccause it shows people prtesting against and the negative impact globalization has on our wolrd.
Part E: Globalization and Quality of Life
The most interesting thing i learned was that... in 1810 most countries were poor and sick by 2009 most countries were on the middle also every country can make become wealthy and healthy.

Unit 1:Blog Entry

Part A: Reflection
In this unit I learned that... Canada is a bilingual country because the two official languages are English and French.
I found it really interesting that... commercials are usually louder and that Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications comission (CTRC) control what we watch and hear on the TV and radio, also that it keeps our cultural identity safe.
I can connect what we have learned in class to myself because every country has its own identity as do every citizen in that country, I am a citizen in Canada and I have my own indentity.
What surprised me in this unit the most was... how multi-cultural our world is, there is many different culturals around which is a pretty amazing thing because you learn and see how each culture does things, to getting someones attention or putting a straw in pop can
One question I still have is... why is not every country bilingual?
One learning strategy I found helpful was the word wheel because it helps you understand the concept of the word also how it connects to another word. If I was to teach someone how to use this I would tell them to first to look at all the words pick which word connects to almost every other word. Then to pick the second word that connects to the first word and show an example of how they connect. Next another word that connexts to the second word show how they connect. Finally once you get around the wheel this will help them remember how each word connects and the meaning of it.

PartB:Economic Globalization

Outsourcing is when a country gives a job to another country because it is cheaper to pay people in another country to create the resources they want to sell. This image represents outsourcing because it shows that may different countries and cultures outsource because each hand is coming form a diferent country also the hands are different colors. Transnational companies use outsourcing because they can save money using method. A disadvantage of outsourcing is that the quality may not be efficient.

Part C: Globalization and Identity

Bill 101 was a law passed to keep the francophones of Quebec cultural identity safe. This statement means that the government doesn't need to intervene for a country to keep it's culture Also that a country can keep its official language with out Bill 101. Quebec passed Bill 101 to try to keep their culture from changing, but the speaker says that without Bill 101 the language they speak will not change, Quebec people have spoke french for years and it will not change.

Bill 101 was successful because people learned a different language some people liked learning a new language. Imigrants that came to Quebec had to go to french school unless you were a anglaphone. Also french was the official language for francophones. People disagreed with Bill 101 because it was a challenge to assit someone that spoke french.

I do not agree with this statement because different cultures adapt to a different country. Things can change over years, because somehing started in one country does not mean it will stay in that country forever. The official language of a country can change. Bill 101 was created to keep a countries cultural identity, I believe that Bill 101 was a great idea.

Historical Globalization

Part A; Reflection
-In this unit I learned that aboriginal people in Residential Schools many years ago tried to get an apology from Canadian government. The Canadian government was going to give the aboriginal people money but no amount of money could fix the pain they went through as a child or erase their memories of being sexual and emotionally abused.
-I found it really interesting that it took the government so many years to finally apologize to aboriginal people or give them money. By the time the government had apologized more than half the people that lived through Residential Schools have died.
-I can connect what I have learned in class with expierences outsuide of school for example kids today still get sexually and emotionally abused.
-What surprised me in this unit the most was that sixty thousand aboriginals were effected by Residential Schools.
-One concept that I am having difficulty with is Cultural Contact I dont understand everything that happened.
-One skill or learning strategy I found useful was S.O.A.P.S. (Subject, Occasion, Audience, Purpose and Speaker) It helped me understand what happened, when it happened, how it happend and who was involved.

Part B; Early Economic Globalization
Mercantilism is a type of trade that was controlled by government to increase their wealth. Many merchants wanted freedom to make their own money. After Mercantilism came Capitalism which is also another trade that was not controlled by govenment and their was competition between the stores. After Capitalism there was Industrialization that was similar to Capitalism except their was raw materials from all around the world and sold in markets. Industrialization led to Imperialism, Imperialsim is when one nation takes over another nation for territory or raw materials.
Part C; Impacts of Imperialism
This source the White Man's Burden tells us that motivation for Imperialism was similar to The Scramble of Africa. In both situations they civilized different colonies.

Part D; Legacy of Imperialism in Canada
The legacy Imperialism left in Canada made an impact on the country. For example Imperialism changed Canada's government and laws. This shows that changing Canada's government was a positive effect because there are many different resources from all over the world also people can make their own money. Another example is how one race was suprier than a different race. This shows that grouping different races was negaive becuase it caused conflict between other countries. Therefore the legaceys of Imperialism was a negative and positive effect on Canada.

Part E; Connection to Globalization
Globalization is a trend toward greater interconnectedness and interdependence of the world. The things we have learned in class relate to globalization for example Imperialism was when countries became independent which is part of the concept of globalization.

Introductory assignment

Summary;
Recently in social class I have learned what Globalization is and the
eight different types. Globalization is a trend towards greater
interconnectedness and interdependence of the world.
The
eight different types are Social, Political, Economic, Ecological, Financial,
Cultural, Geographical and Technological. The most interesting thing I
learned was that everyday everyone is involved in globalization for instance
texting or being on twitter is an example of social. A way I have
experienced
globalization in my life recently is been on twitter, texting and been on the internet.

Reflection;
I have completed every assignment in class so far, I don't always understand
everything that happens in class but i do my best to complete the work to my
best ability. Two things I would like to work on during the next few weeks to
help me improve. One pay attention more in class instead of dazing of into another
world and to get my work done in class instead of waisting class time. I believe
that meeting these two goals may improve my social studies mark.

Assignment;

This picture represents Technology Globalization because technology
in our world is increasing everyday. There are many things that are
operated by computers for example cashiers, elevators, doors and
many other things. This picture of a robot hand that is holding the
world which shows that technology has a huge impact on our world
.
